How Easy Is It To Ride A Bike

old bikeWe have all been there at some point in our lives, but do you remember when you learned to ride a bike? Today was little Aflies go to have that crack at learning to ride a bike. At first he didnt really want to entertain the idea but, then he heard that i had seen a younger girl than him ride a bike so being a guy he had to do better. This is the first time i have had to teach someone to ride a bike and to be honest i thought it could be easy but……… its not. We started with a little test run just to see how things were going to go and the first thing that you notice is that the stabilisers are by far the worst thing invented.

The problem with this is that after a while the child learns to depend on the them rather than leaning the bike to stay upright. This caused a few problems when it came to taking them off. I started by showing Alfie how to get the bike to stay in the middle then running behind him holding the saddle while he tries it on his own. This didn’t really work, even after a few goes he was convinced that he couldn’t do it and wanted to go inside.

After that we took him to a football field and gave it one more try and to my surprise it went really well. The problem with the grass is that its hard for him to pedal on but with a bit more of a push that’s not really a problem. After a little more coaching and some running behind it wasn’t long before he was riding the bike on his own. Granted he can only go in a straight line but after just an hour of learning i was really impressed with him.

We are going to try again tomorrow and see if we can improve on today. Without a doubt we will be back on the grass first and get his confidence up.

For all those about to teach the little people how to ride a bike for us the best thing was a football pitch and to push them a bit faster than you normally like them to ride. It worked for Alfie, it might help with you.

Ill be sure to write again as the learning to ride a bike experience continues. We hope to have him riding by the weekend.
